Start With the Job the Truck Must Do
A useful inspection starts before you open the hood. Write down the truck’s intended work, typical load, route conditions, daily mileage, and any size limits at jobsites. A truck can be mechanically sound and still be the wrong choice if its configuration does not suit the work.
Confirm the manufacturer’s identification labels and published ratings rather than estimating capacity from appearance. Compare the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the dashboard, door label, title, and available records. Examine belts, hoses, wiring, battery mounts, terminals, intake plumbing, and visible engine mounts. Check the radiator and charge-air cooler for damage or packed debris without opening a hot cooling system.

Inspect the Frame, Suspension, Steering, and Driveline
The frame carries the working load, so take your time. Use a light to inspect both rails, crossmembers, brackets, spring hangers, and visible mounting points. Look for cracks, deformation, severe corrosion, fresh welds, elongated holes, missing fasteners, and areas where components have rubbed. Surface rust and structural section loss are very different conditions. A qualified inspection is the right next step when corrosion or a repair makes the remaining strength uncertain.
Compare the frame from side to side and look for buckling or repairs near suspension and body mounts. Look for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, weather cracking, sidewall damage, embedded objects, and uneven wear. Wear on one edge, cupping, or repeated patterns can point toward alignment, bearing, suspension, or inflation issues.
Inspect wheels for cracks, distortion, corrosion at mounting surfaces, damaged stud holes, missing hardware, and signs of movement around fasteners. Examine accessible brake components for leakage, damaged hoses or lines, and obvious unevenness. Brake design and legal inspection requirements vary, and measuring remaining friction material may require wheel removal. Treat any braking concern as a reason for evaluation by a qualified commercial-vehicle technician.
Match Records to Physical Condition
Ask for the title, maintenance history, repair invoices, inspection records, and manuals for installed equipment. Match dates and mileage entries to the odometer and VIN. Look for consistent oil and filter service, cooling-system work, brake repairs, transmission or clutch work, emissions-system service, and recurring complaints.
Records are most useful when they identify the truck and align with the components you see. Ask why the truck is being sold, how it was used, how long it has been parked, whether major components were replaced, and whether warning lights or known faults remain.
Use a Structured Used Truck Test Drive
Only drive a truck when you are licensed, insured, authorized, and comfortable with its size and controls. Begin at low speed in a safe area. Check steering response, clutch engagement or transmission take-up, brake feel, gauge behavior, and mirror visibility. Listen with the radio and fan off.
As conditions safely allow, use several speeds and moderate acceleration. The engine should pull consistently without persistent hesitation or warning lights. Shifts should be appropriate for the transmission design, without unexpected slipping, harsh engagement, or unusual noises. Note vibration under acceleration, at steady speed, and while coasting; the pattern helps a technician narrow the source.
On a straight, level road, notice whether the truck tracks predictably and whether the steering wheel returns normally after a turn. Brake in a controlled manner and watch for pulling, vibration, delayed response, air-pressure warnings, or abnormal noises. Check reverse operation and low-speed maneuverability. After the drive, let the engine idle, look again for leaks, smell for overheated components, and recheck for messages. Never touch a wheel hub or brake component that may be hot.
Turn Findings Into a Buying Decision
Separate observations into three groups: normal wear, repairs needed soon, and safety or structural concerns requiring expert review. Then estimate downtime as well as parts and labor. A less expensive truck may not be the better value if it needs immediate tires, brakes, emissions repairs, or drivetrain work before it can earn revenue.
For a serious candidate, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a technician familiar with that truck class and its engine, transmission, brake system, and emissions equipment.
